The 3-DAB modification adds non-fluorescent N-[4-(4-dimethylamino)phenylazo]benzoic acid (DABCYL) to the 3’ end of an oligonucleotide. The DABCYL is conjugated to a modified cytidine nucleoside which may participate in hybridization. 3' DABCYL labeled oligonucleotides are used in a wide array of applications, including dual-labeled fluorogenic probes for real-time PCR. DABCYL is a general purpose dark quencher that absorbs in the green range of the visible spectrum and is often paired with fluorescein.
